DAY 18 - Sarchu, Himachal Pradesh

Many people find it strange that I’ve never gone camping. Not during school or college. So I don’t really know what it is like to rough it out in the wild. And it doesn’t help that my one outdoor tented accommodation experience was a semi-luxurious one.

On the road from Leh to Manali, we (it was a group trip) made a stopover at Sarchu—a popular spot to break for the night on the Leh-Manali Highway. It is situated on an altitude of 4,290 m, between Baralacha La to the south and Lachulung La to the north. The tents were perched up on a plateau, where sheep were grazing in the tent’s backyard (so to speak). Comfortable double beds, a functioning bathroom and a mosquito net, we couldn’t ask for more; at least not from a tent. Although, it was freezing cold, so I suppose warmth would be on my list!

There was a tiny dining room as well and pretty good food. And we did have bonfires and hot coffee with ghost stories for company. I guess it was a camping experience after all; just with a little twist.
